The latest FDA advisory on the drug is expected to arrive on March 27. The drug has been available on the internet for as little as a week since launch. Many doctors are eager to learn more about Viagra's impact on the medical community.
Viagra, the well-known brand name for the drug Cialis, is known as a "little blue pill," which some people believe may be due to its supposed effect on erectile dysfunction.
The FDA advisory was based on data from a "real-world" study conducted by two independent drug companies. The study looked at men who took a pill of the drug for a variety of reasons, including sexual dysfunction, heart conditions or performance anxiety.
The study's findings are based on two years of data in the medical journalJournal of Sexual Medicine. The drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, said the results were consistent with a placebo-controlled clinical study on Viagra's side effects.
Dr. David Gershan, head of clinical research at Pfizer, said the data showed "an important benefit" of the drug.
"This data may be a sign that we need to take a more active role in the health care system in the future," Dr. Gershan said. "I don't know any of the companies that are involved in the clinical trial, and I don't know about the patients. The data from the trial was very helpful, and we were able to get them involved."
But Dr. Robert M. Dolin, the head of clinical research at Pfizer, said the study's results were based on limited clinical data. While the drugs were being studied, he said they should have been taken in a "real-world" way.
Gershan said the FDA advisory is the first that has been published on the topic. "This was a very small study with very limited data," he said. "We didn't have that data in our own study, so the findings are very important. I would urge anyone interested to read the data and share it with the medical community."
The FDA advisory committee on erectile dysfunction has been asked to weigh in. The committee is expected to consider whether Viagra can help people suffering from erectile dysfunction, such as in men with cardiovascular disease, or in people with a history of heart disease.
Viagra, sold under the brand name Cialis, has been available in the U. S. for a variety of reasons. While the drug was approved by the FDA in 2003, the drug was removed from the market in 2010 because of concerns about heart problems.
When Pfizer announced that it would be marketing Viagra to men under the age of 18, the drug was touted as a "signal" of erectile dysfunction. The drug's label, in fact, said men who take Viagra should be seen "as soon as possible" and that a doctor's office should have a physical exam. However, Viagra users are also advised not to take nitrates, which are used to treat chest pain, because nitrates can cause "severe" side effects like a sudden drop in blood pressure.
The Food and Drug Administration also approved Viagra for people with a history of heart disease.
The FDA advisory committee on erectile dysfunction is expected to be held on April 15. It's the first time it has been held twice before to discuss sexual dysfunction in patients. "It's an important area," Dr. M. Scott Dolin, the FDA's medical director, said.
Scott Dolin is director of the Sexual Medicine and Reproductive Health Program at the University of Chicago School of Medicine. He is also the clinical director of the Sexual Medicine and Reproductive Health Program at Northwestern University. Dolin is also the director of the sexual medicine division of the American Urological Association.
